Kenny Burrell

The subject line of this post is in reference to Kenny Burrell’s album “God Bless The Child”. When I get too much into the “mechanics” of Jazz Guitar playing I always find solace in the bluesy comfort of Kenny Burrell. Even though he is one of the icons of Jazz Guitar his playing has a fresh breath of simplicity and emotion which you just can’t beat. Which is why I got out my old vinyl copy last night of “God Bless The Child” and sat back on my sofa to just dig what Kenny had to say. I sometimes “forget” to just enjoy the music I listen to for no other reason than it’s great music. It definitely reminds me of how I came on to Jazz Guitar in the first place and how exciting it was to hear for the first time those wonderful players that initially inspired me to “cross-over” to Jazz. I think I’ll be doing a lot more listening from now on. Later…

Kenny was one of my early influences in jazz guitar, and as a kid, I tried to play his stuff. His apparent simplicity is misleading, I think. He just seems to put in what is needed and no more. No gnat-notes just for the purpose of filling every space! He is a great example of taste!
