Larry Coryell’s life
Aug 17th, 2007 by admin
I came across an article on Larry Coryell in the Detroit Free Press that answered five questions from Larry’s Autobiography “Improvising: My Life in Music”. I will definitely pick up this book for my own interests as well as to review for Jazz Guitar Life. I have been a fan of Larry’s playing since I first heard him on old vinyl recordings with Gary Burton which I still have: Duster, Lofty Fake Anagram and In Concert. During that time Larry got into the Jazz/Rock thing which was cool but not my cup of tea. Although, when I listen to his earlier stuff now I appreciate it a lot more for the historical importance he had on that scene, so he gets props…:) I also saw him twice in concert. Once with a trio in the early 80’s at the now defunct Jazz club in Montreal called The Rising Sun and once as a duo with Emily Remler. In fact I think they were an item at that time but I could be mistaken. I’m sure there’s a certain someone who could tell me…:) Anyhoo, his autobiography should be quite interesting. If you have already read it please leave a comment and let us know what you thought.

I am a big fan of Larry (and also Emily) For sure, will buy and read the book. Thank you for the info.
Worth a read. Short chapters going through his life chronologically; its written in an unadorned style and at times appears to be unflinchingly honest. Interesting stuff music-wise and in giving a feel for the times and circles he inhabited.
Plus it reprints a number of his early Downbeat columns with his comments from the present AND he has recently recorded a number of tracks to complement these columns.
If you’re a Coryell fan I think you’ll like it a lot.
