Dave Stryker’s Unique Voice
Aug 24th, 2007 by admin
As I was doing some writing this afternoon, I was listening, like I always do, to Jazz Radio station KCSM and happened upon a tune that while I didn’t know the origin of, I had no problem immediately recognized the sonic signature of Jazz Guitarist Dave Stryker. For those who may not be familiar with Dave, he is a dynamic and gifted Jazz Guitarist who has paid his dues a few times over and is finally, within the past few years, getting the recognition he so richly deserves from press, peers and fans alike. I first heard him as sideman to Jazz Vocalist Kevin Mahogany and was knocked out by his beautiful smooth and silky guitar tone. Then later on I had the pleasure of checking out and reviewing his first CD for Mel Bay Records “Big City” which was a killer album with solid straight-ahead and bluesy playing. And now I am currently reviewing his latest CD for Mel Bay Records “The Chaser” which is also a great album of solid tunes and spirited Jazz Guitar. If you have not had the opportunity to check out Dave Stryker then pick up one of his latest CD’s or check out his catalogue of 19 CD’s as a leader or his many dates as a sideman to some of the biggest names in Jazz including saxophone giant Stanley Turrentine and Legendary organist Jack McDuff, . I doubt you’ll be disappointed.
Incidentally, the tune I heard him on this afternoon was from drummer Tony Reedus’ CD “Minor Thing”. An album I’m definitely gonna have to track down.
