I was listening to my favorite Jazz radio station the other day and heard a tune that caught my attention. It was a straight-ahead yet “fusiony” tune with some wicked guitar playing. I waited until the tune was over for the announcer to say who it was and was quite surprised to hear that it was from the latest Vital Information CD “Vitalization“. I assumed the guitar player was Frank Gambale but after checking out the Vital Information website I learned that the guitarist was actually a guy by the name of Vinny Valentino. Well, let me tell you, this cat was smokin’ with some great lines and technique to spare. I had never heard of him until that moment but turns out he’s a well known cat in the higher echelon of the Jazz Guitar Community with none other than guitar great George Benson saying Vinny is a “young genius with brilliant tone and fresh ideas.” Just when you think you know what’s going on in the Jazz Guitar Community you unearth a new treasure that excites you all over again…or me anyway. Without a doubt, Vinny is a guy to keep an ear on and I am looking forward to checking out more of what Vinny has to offer.
