A couple of days ago I received Dave Allen’s latest CD titled “Real and Imagined” and while I was only able to give it a cursory listen for the moment, it is an enthralling session with brilliant playing by all concerned. For those who are not familiar with Dave Allen, he is an extremely talented Jazz Guitarist living in New York who seems to be right at home amongst the more adventurous contemporary Jazz Guitarists on the scene today like Kurt Rosenwinkle, Adam Rogers and Jonathan Kreisberg. His playing is intense and extremely articulate with envious technique and outstanding harmonic awareness. Joining Dave on the nine original compositions is sax wunderkind Seamus Blake, Drew Gress on Bass and my fav drummer Mark Ferber. These musicians are all high level players, bringing a commitment and energy to the music that is both remarkable and not unexpected. If you know these cats then you know what heavy company Dave is traveling with. “Real and Imagined” is a CD that you should definitely check out and the liner notes by Jazz Journalist David R. Adler complete the package quite nicely. If you are interested in learning more about Dave Allen, check out his interview on Jazz Guitar Life and his debut CD review as well. Peace.
