I spent many a night listening to Cal Collins with The Steve Schmidt Trio at the original Blue Wisp Jazz Club in Obriensville just outside Cincinnati. Often refered to as "God Collins" by wannabe guitar players in the Cincinnati area, he was a gifted player and a true gentleman. He is deeply missed.

Thanks to everyone for keeping Cal's memories alive. I am his oldest daughter and occasionally find myself searching for articles about him. I don't know one note from another but can still appreciate how gifted he was. I guess if you know dad play at Whitey's you also realize he could go back to those "country" roots. I still wonder if he didn't do that just to get my grandmother out to watch him play! I miss the crazy guy and love to come across these articles. Thanks again!

Wow... thanks for this... I used to watch Cal play in a bar on the northwest side of Cincinnati, was it Whiteys? We were too young to be in there, but they let us guitar wannabes stay in the back and drink colas to watch Cal. Man, he could play. Bring on the Cal vids!

Thanks for the Cal Collins material and thoughts. I bought that same Concord Jazz album years ago and was suitably impressed. I subsequently got most of his albums. I used to own a fine solo album of his, but lost it, much to my regret.
I had the good fortune of seeing Cal play here in Brisbane, Australia in the 80's, and he was great and self-effacing.
A humble suggestion ...why not convert your highlights of the DVD to something like Xvid or Divx and put it up on Rapidshare or the like, rather than Youtube. You could restrict the link to those who you considered bona fide. I agree that he is under-recognised for his jazz guitar contributions. Thanks again for the blog and kindest regards.
