Jimmy Raney and Atilla Zoller - Duo
Dec 22nd, 2007 by admin
There has been a couple of nice Jimmy Raney/Cal Collins video clips on YouTube recently and I thought I would dig into my video archives and pull out a duo performance featuring Jimmy and Atilla Zoller from the 17th Frankfurt Jazz Festival in 1980. They both are of course master Jazz Guitarists in their own right and listening to them play together is very cool! This might be another side of Jimmy Raney that you don’t hear too often as he explores a more introspective, almost free aspect to these performances. Same with Atilla although I am not too well versed in Atilla’s musical character. Needless to say, both play some great music and I’m sure you will all enjoy this rare get together. Feel free to share your thoughts on this clips.

This is a great find!
Terrific to hear (and SEE) Raney, who I always thought of as an archtype bebop player, exploring this kind of territory. Zoller was a player who liked to throw a bit of dissonance into the mix in his Chico Hamilton days as I recall. Fascinating seeing them together like this.
this is a gem .
Jimmy was an amazing player and influenced many of the great be bop guitarists .
Attilla was a fine player and teacher .
it is exciting to hear them together. duo improvising at its best ,
5/5 stars
Thanks for posting this. I saw Jimmy and Attilla at Bradley’s in New York back in 1985. My good friend Randy Johnston took me there to see Jimmy. What a great experience!
This is truly a rare treat for me. I have been looking for several years for a video of Jimmy playing anything. Wonderful! Both of these fine guitarists exhibit a rare talent for creating spontaneous, melodic lines.
Raney is a monster !
