As you may or may not know, MaxJazz recording artist Russell Malone has a new CD, Triple Play, coming out on November 2, 2010, which features Russell in an intimate trio setting alongside Bassist David Wong and Drummer Montez Coleman. To kick off this highly anticipated release, Russell, and MaxJazz, will celebrate the release of Triple Play by hosting a CD launch party tonight (October 20, 2010) in St. Louis at the famed Jazz at the Bistro room. Russell will also be extending this engagement until the 23rd, so if you can’t make the CD Launch, at least you can drop by another night to hear one of the shining lights of Jazz Guitar today!

I was fortunate to have received an advanced copy of Triple Play for review on Jazz Guitar Life and let me tell you, this CD smokes! Russell’s playing is, as always, top notch, and there’s so much great guitar work going on you won’t even miss the fact that there’s no other harmonic instrument supporting him as Wong and Coleman provide Russell with all the support he needs to do his thang! A review of the CD will be forthcoming on Jazz Guitar Life…:)

As I wrap this up, I’d like to point out that there is a great podcast interview with Russell over at this link. Interviewer Bob Bennett does a nice job covering different aspects of Russell’s musical identity and it’s definitely a worthwhile 15 minutes of your time to check it out. Russell has a great way of cutting through the BS that sometimes finds its way throughout the World of Music. So check out the interview today to get to know Russell a little more.

Well, that’s it for now folks. Below is the concert info for Russell’s 4 day engagement at Jazz at the Bistro taken from their Facebook event page. If you do happen to attend the CD Launch or any of the shows, please feel free to leave a comment. And don’t forget to save your pennies for the November 2nd release of Russell Malone’s Triple Play. It will be worth every cent.

Ciao for now.

Russell Malone’s lyrical guitar work has projected him into the mainstream of jazz guitar. Having dazzling technique erupt at will, as well as melodic, mellow ballad material, Malone shows extraordinary skill across his six strings. His skillful interpretations stir the imagination while igniting the soul. These performances will serve as a CD Release Party for Malone’s forthcoming MAXJAZZ album.

2 sets each night starting at 8:30 & 10:15 p.m.

Tickets: Wed/Thu $25, Fri/Sat $30, $10 Students w/ID

    Hi Lyle…

Glad to see this write up. Great job.

I know you mention that Darrell (two r’s) Green and David are supporting Russell in the CD Event shows, but Montez Coleman (Roy Hargrove’s drummer) is actually the drummer on the CD, as I am sure you are already aware since you have your own copy. Montez is also the drummer on the very popular Russell Malone video “Mugshot” taped at SMOKE back in 2004 as a video bonus for the “Playground” cd.

I pre-ordered my two copies of “Triple Play” directly from MAXJAZZ, and received them last week. But, I was thrilled to also win the contest on Facebook to get yet another copy, hopefully to be signed by Russell before it is sent to me. If I had been in St. Louis, I would have also won two tickets to their show!

There is a great new promo photo on Russell Malone’s All About Jazz musician profile page, Jimmy Ryan is the photographer, as well as being the photographer for the photos used on “Triple Play.”

Hope to chat with you soon, Lyle.
